I’d call Japan a bigger historical anomaly than China and Ancient Egypt. Those two countries churned over dynasties every couple centuries while maintaining roughly the same bureaucracy while the Emperor of Japan can reliably trace back his ancestry 1,500 years. With mythical claims that go back another millennium.
Instead the government around the Emperor has gone from a China-style bureaucracy, to feudal military dictatorship, to a modern-European-influenced parliament.
